Your laptop gets hot to the touch, the fan runs loud and constant, and after a while the screen goes black and the machine powers off on its own. This is a built-in safety shutdown — the processor is hitting its temperature limit and cutting power before the hardware is damaged. It is protective, not random, and almost always fixable without replacing the computer.

2. A soft, clean cloth
3. A flat, hard surface to work on (not a bed or lap)
Warnings

Steps

5. Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) and close any app using a large share of CPU that you did not start yourself. → CPU usage settles below roughly 20% when you are not actively running something heavy.
Confirm it worked

2. The laptop stays warm but not painfully hot to the touch.

If it didn't work
