What Happens to the Information You Type Into an AI Chatbot?
AI chatbots can help summarize documents, explain subjects and draft messages. But a conversation is not necessarily a private note stored only on your device. Processing, retention and training policies depend on the service and its settings.
## Share only what the task requires Before pasting a document, remove unnecessary names, account details, customer information and confidential material. A short excerpt may be enough. Never enter passwords or one-time authentication codes into a chatbot.
## Chat history and model training are separate A service may retain conversations for your convenience while offering a separate setting governing use of content for model improvement. In ChatGPT, OpenAI documents the Data Controls setting called Improve the model for everyone. Turning it off is not the same as deleting conversation history. Check the current settings and policy of whichever service you use.
## Temporary does not necessarily mean instantly erased Temporary conversations may be excluded from ordinary history or training while still subject to limited retention for safety. Policies and behavior can change, particularly if a temporary conversation is saved or transferred into another feature. Read the service's current explanation rather than assuming temporary means no copies exist.
## Connected services add another layer If an AI tool can access email, cloud storage or other apps, review the permissions and what information may be sent to outside services. Workplace information should be used only with tools approved for that purpose.
## Verify outputs Privacy is only one consideration. AI responses can also be incorrect. Check consequential claims against reliable sources before acting on them.
The bottom line: use AI for the task without handing it unnecessary sensitive information, and understand the specific service's current data controls.
