How to Stop Your Phone From Repeating the Same Notifications

Fix repeated notifications by checking notification settings, disabling “re-alert” behavior, and updating or resetting the misbehaving app.

Repeated notifications—especially the same message or alert coming back again and again—are one of the most annoying phone problems. The good news: you can usually fix it without reinstalling everything. Start with the settings that control how notifications behave, then move to the app itself if the problem is isolated.

Step 1: Confirm it’s really the same notification (and not a new one)

Before changing settings, look closely at what’s repeating. If the notification text changes (even slightly), the app may be sending multiple updates. If the text is identical and the timestamp keeps updating, it’s more likely a “re-alert” setting or a notification that isn’t being marked as handled.

  • If you can, open the app and check whether the notification is marked as read.
  • If the notification repeats even after you open the app, treat it as a settings/app behavior issue.

Step 2: Check the notification style settings (the most common cause)

Many phones have options that control whether notifications repeat, how they group, and whether they re-alert you after you’ve already seen them. If you recently changed notification settings (or installed a new app), this is the first place to look.

On iPhone, go to Settings → Notifications, select the app, and review options like whether alerts are enabled and how they appear. On Android, go to Settings → Notifications (or Apps → [app name] → Notifications) and check the app’s alert categories and behavior.

  • Make sure the app’s notifications are enabled only for the categories you actually want (for example, messages vs. marketing).
  • If you see an option that sounds like “repeat alerts,” “re-alert,” or “remind,” turn it off.

If you’re not sure where to find the right screen, start by searching your phone’s Settings for the word “notifications,” then narrow down to the specific app.

Step 3: Turn off “notification grouping” only if it’s causing confusion

Some phones group notifications by app or thread. Grouping usually helps, but it can also make it look like the same alert is repeating when it’s actually multiple items being bundled together. If you suspect grouping is the culprit, temporarily change the grouping behavior to see whether the “repeats” stop.

  • Try switching grouping to a simpler view (or disable grouping) for the affected app.
  • If the repeats stop or become clearly different alerts, you’ve identified the cause.

If you’re dealing with missed or hard-to-find alerts, you may also want to review how your phone stores notification history. For Android, see Accidentally Swiped Away an Android Notification? Here's How to Find It Again (/articles/recover-dismissed-android-notifications/).

Step 4: Fix the app itself (updates, background behavior, and notification permissions)

If the repeats are tied to one app, the app may be stuck in a loop—often because it’s not updating properly, it can’t access notifications reliably, or it’s failing to mark items as read. This is where you focus on the app’s permissions and background behavior.

Do these in order:

  • Update the app from your app store.
  • Check the app’s notification permission is enabled (and that you didn’t accidentally disable it and re-enable it later).
  • If your phone has a “battery optimization” or “background restrictions” setting, make sure the app isn’t being aggressively restricted. (Exact wording varies by Android version and phone brand.)

If the app has multiple notification categories, disable the ones you don’t need. Repeated alerts often come from a category you forgot about (for example, “reminders” or “activity updates”).

Step 5: Clear the notification “stuck state” (without losing your data)

Sometimes the notification itself gets stuck—your phone keeps re-showing it because the app never successfully acknowledges it. You can often clear the stuck state by forcing the app to refresh.

  • Force close the app, then reopen it.
  • If it still repeats, restart your phone once.

If you’re on Android and the problem persists, you can also try clearing the app’s cache (not data). Clearing cache can fix notification loops without wiping your account data. On iPhone, you can’t clear cache the same way, so the closest equivalent is updating the app and restarting the phone.

Step 6: If it’s still repeating, isolate the cause

When a notification repeats across multiple apps, it’s more likely a system-level setting or a “Do Not Disturb / Focus” interaction. When it repeats for only one app, it’s almost always that app’s notification behavior.

Try these quick isolation checks:

  • Temporarily disable notifications for the affected app for a day. If the repeats stop completely, re-enable and adjust categories one by one.
  • If you use Focus/Do Not Disturb, confirm the app is allowed to notify during that mode (or that it isn’t being repeatedly allowed/blocked).
  • If the repeats started after a phone update, check whether any notification settings were reset.

If you’re trying to reduce interruptions overall, you might find it helpful to review how notification modes work. For Windows users there’s a similar concept, but the principle is the same: control which apps can interrupt you. See How to Stop Windows 11 Notifications From Interrupting You (/articles/stop-windows-11-notifications/).

When to reinstall (and when not to)

Reinstalling can fix a broken notification setup, but it’s a bigger step than most people need. Only reinstall if you’ve tried updates, permission checks, and a restart/force close.

  • Reinstall if the app’s notifications repeat even after you’ve adjusted categories and battery/background settings.
  • Before reinstalling, make sure you know how to sign back in (especially for apps that don’t use a simple password reset).

After reinstalling, re-check notification categories. Some apps default to enabling more alert types than you might expect.

Quick checklist you can follow in 5 minutes

If you want the fastest path to a fix, use this order:

  • Open Settings → Notifications → [affected app] and confirm alerts are enabled only for the categories you want.
  • Look for any “repeat” or “re-alert” option and turn it off.
  • Update the app, then force close it and reopen.
  • Restart your phone once.
  • If it’s still repeating, clear the app cache (Android) or reinstall (last resort).

If you tell me whether you’re on iPhone or Android, and which app is repeating the notifications, I can suggest the exact settings path to check first.
